Fossils from Qatar – a Smithsonian-Qatar Museums collaboration

This collection features 3D models that Smithsonian and Qatar Museums researchers digitized from fossils and fossil sites that are protected heritage in Qatar.

Al Maszhabiya is an area in southwest Qatar that preserves one of the world’s richest localities of fossil sea cows. Researchers documented hundreds of sea cow fossils in a small area of the Southern Reserve. These fossils are about 21 million years old. Al Maszhabiya is protected by Qatar’s Ministry of Environment of Climate Change and listed as an official Heritage Area by Qatar Museums.
