- In the wake of the first one hundred days of Franklin Roosevelt's administration, which saw the blizzard of legislation designed to pull America out of the Great Depression, sculptor Reuben Nakian came to Washington to portray the chief of the new National Recovery Administration. Shortly afterward, eight other New Deal cabinet members and agency officials agreed that the artists might model them as they worked. An appointment with the busy president, however, could not be arranged, and Nakian worked from photographs to create this image of a vibrant, confident leader.
