Voyager Sonification

Hear the shape of a Smithsonian artifact!

This experimental experience is developed for visually impaired users to understand the shape of our 3D digitized artifacts through sonification. "Sonification is the use of non-speech audio to convey information or perceptualize data." (cit. Wikipedia) In this application we are using sound to convey the depth of the surface of a 3D model under the user's pointer. Moving this pointer across the object results in a change of sound rate or pitch that also conveys the shape of the object along that path.

To get started:

  1. Select the "Sonify" button,

, to kick off the experience.

  2. Select the "Audio Intro" button for important navigation instructions.
